Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of music therapy on psychotic symptoms in female patients with chronic schizophrenia. Methods: Forty-six female patients from a psychiatric hospital were assigned to the experimental group (n=26) and the control group (n=20). Control group patients received general nursing care and occupational rehabilitation treatment. Patients in the experimental group received additional music therapy for eight sessions in one month. The duration and frequency of each music
therapy session was 52 minutes twice a week. Changes in psychotic symptoms were evaluated after music therapy intervention. Results: Music therapy significantly reduced scores for negative symptoms on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale compared to controls. Conclusion: This study supports the concept that music therapy is effective in the treatment of negative symptoms of female chronic schizophrenia patients. (Full text in Chinese)
