Severe Akathisia after Switching Medication from Aripiprazole to
Olanzapine
Tzu-Yao Lin, Sun-Yuan Chou
A systematic review has reported olanzapine-
induced extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) are
less prevalent than other second generation antipsychotic
(SGA) drugs [2]. Here I present a case
report of a young girl patient who developed severe
akathisia after receiving olanzapine treatment
with regular routine dosage.
A 19-year-old girl patient was brought to our
emergency department due to worsened psychotic
symptoms. She was diagnosed as schizophrenia at
her age of 16 years. Her initial presentations included
talking to herself, disorganized speech,
and wandering outside.
