Differentiation and Integration: Challenges and Proposed Strategies for Medical Subspecialty Societies in Taiwan
Chia-Yih Liu
Taiwan is considered an advanced state in the
development of medical specialties in Asia. She is
among the pioneer countries to have certification
system to certificate specialist in medical specialties,
earlier than Japan and Korea. In the recent 10
years, medical subspecialties are also differentiated
rapidly in Taiwan. Therefore, many subspecialty
societies have been founded. To my best
knowledge, there have been more than 20 subspecilty
societies under the medical specialty of gynecology
and obstetrics in Taiwan.
The missions of a medical society in my
opinion should include:
- to provide new knowledge for its members.
- to increase benefits for its members (for example, to enhance professional development and academic interactions of members).
- to interact with international societies on behalf of the local experts.
