The Relationship between Quality of Life and Marital Status in Patients with Schizophrenia

Yu-Mei Huang, Chen-Shih Wang

Objective:The purposes of this study were to investigate the difference in the quality of life (QoL) between married and single patients with schizophrenia, and to explore the relationship between QoL and marital satisfaction of the mar- ried patients. Methods:Totally,100 single patients and married patients with schizophrenia were sampled using purposive sampling method. We collected data with QoL questionnaire, Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), Brief Psychi- atric Rating Scale (BPRS), WHOQOL-BREF (Taiwanese version), and Marital Satisfaction Scale for Schizophrenia (MSSS). Chi-squared test, multivariate anal- ysis of variance (MANOVA), Pearson product-moment correlation, canonical cor- relation, and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: A significantly positive correlation was found between QoL and marital satisfac- tion of married patients (p< 0.05). The better social connection was in their QoL, the more satisfaction in all aspects of their marriage status. Conclusion:A posi- tive correlation was found between QoL and marital satisfaction of married pa- tients. Among all aspects of the quality of life, the social-relationship aspect was the most effective factor for predicting their marital satisfaction.
