Smoking in Patients with Mental Illnesses: The Magnitude of the Problem among the Mentally Ill

Ru-Band Lu

Smoking rates among patients with psychiat-ric diagnoses are disproportionately high. In pa-tients with depressive and anxiety disorders, the rate of smoking ranges from 40% to 50% while it is above 70% among people with schizophrenia [1]. Since smoking is so closely linked to psychi-atric disorders, whether concomitant smoking is a result from psychiatric disorders still remains a question. On the contrary, many have assumed that the two are inextricably interwoven [2].
