Refeeding Syndrome in Schizophrenia

Wei-Hao Lin, Po-Han Chou, Chih-Chien Lin, Chin-Hong Chan

Refeeding syndrome is a severe electrolyte imbalance and fluid shift associated with metabolic abnormalities in malnourished patients who receive re-alimentation [1]. Up to 50% of acute patients admitted to psychiatric wards are at risk of malnutrition, especially patients with anorexia nervosa, alcoholism, depression, schizophrenia, and dementia [2, 3]. Here, we report a patient with acute schizophrenia who had poor intake and developed refeeding syndrome after his being admitted to our acute psychiatric ward.
